France
The present French republic can seek its origin in the kingdom created by
the Franks, a Germanic tribe, in the Migration age. When the Frankish
kingdom was partitioned in 843 became the eastern part of it France. In the
late ninth and early tenth century France's central power eroded away and
France disintegrated into several feudal petty states. The French royal
power was however strengthened in the beginning of the thirteenth century
and during the following centuries were the different hereditary fiefs
returned to the crown one by one. In the New Age was France strong enough to
expand outwards and large territories that had not belonged to France during
the Middle Age was incorporated, this included most of the kingdom of
Burgundy and remaining parts of Lorraine. |
