Legendary High Kings of Ireland
The
traditional list of Irish high kings was compiled as late as c. 1634 and
was intended for propaganda. With a mix of facts, myths and pure
fantasies it was a long and glorious history of Ireland which stretched as
far back as 2000 years before the birth of Christ.
There were however two
alternative chronologies of this list of regents that were created
independent of each other at about the same time by men who used the
same material for their work. Both chronologies are listed below. The
dates in the left column come from the "Annals
of the Four Masters" and the right column is from the
Geoffrey Keating's Irish History (Foras Feasa ar Éirinn).

Niall Noigiallach whose rule is dated
to 376-405 in the list above was a historic person in the first half of
the fifth century and is believed to have died c. 450-455. With him the
