Hesse
The German part state of Hesse is named after the Hessians, which were
a Frankish tribe. During the middle age was Hesse for a period a part of
the Thuringian landgraviate, this was partitioned after a war over the
succession 1247-1264 whereupon Hesse became independent.

Hesse-Homburg
Both Hesse-Darmstadt and Hesse-Kassel were partitioned in three parts 1596
respectively 1627. But the junior branches did not become rulers over
independent territories and are therefore not listed here. The only
exception is Hesse-Homburg, which was created 1596 and became independent
from Hesse-Darmstadt 1768. Homburg lost its independence 1806 but regained
it 1817.
