Counts and Kings of Castile

Castile was originally a county within the kingdom of León before its count Fernán Gonzáles made himself an independent ruler in the middle of the tenth century. Castile was united with the kingdom of Navarre through marriage and when its king Sancho III died 1035 one of his sons became the first king of Castile. Two years later the kingdom of León was conquered by the king of Castile. The union was dissolved when different sons inherited the kingdoms 1065, but renewed 1072-1157 and became permanent 1230. Castile and León became parts of a larger union 1479 united with Aragon 1479 when queen Isabel's husband and co-ruler inherited that kingdom, whereupon the kingdom of Spain was created.
