Regents of Croatia

Two principalities populated by Croats were created during the early middle age, both recognised the Byzantine emperors supremacy. The principality of Croatia was located in the coastal region that is now called Dalmatia while the principality of Slavonia were located between the modern states of Hungary and Bosnia. Tomislav I unified these principalities during the 10th century and assumed the title king. But when Tomislav I died Croatia and Slavonia were temporarily divided between different branches of his dynasty. When this dynasty died out Croatia-Slavonia were annexed by Hungary and remained a part of the Hungarian Monarchy until the end of the First World War when it became a part of the kingdom of Yugoslavia instead. A part of a brief period during the Second World War Croatia would not regain its independence until 1991.
