When the Saxon duchy was partitioned between two branches of the House of Askanien the northern part
became
the duchy of Sachsen-Lauenburg. An additional partition occurred 1305, but Sachen-Lauenburg was reunited a hundred years later. Throughout its
existence it was an insignificant principality in Northern Germany. When
the house of Askanien died out 1689 the duchy was granted to the duke of Lüneburg-Celle, whose lands were inherited by the elector of Hanover 1705.
