Margraves of Montferrat
Montferrat was a margraviate which was located between Turin
and
Milan. It was ruled by a collateral branch of the Byzantine imperial house
from 1306. When this house became extinct Montferrat was after a few years
of Spanish rule united with the duchy of Mantua. Later as a consequence of
the Mantovan War of Succession the northern part of Montferrat was
transferred to Savoy in 1631. The rest of Montferrat was united with Savoy
in 1708 when its ruling dynasty became extinct.
