Austria
Austria was created in the middle of the 10th century as a German
margraviate. It was controlled by the house of Babenberg for nearly 300 years
and became elevated to an immediate imperial duchy in 1156. Beginning in 1282
was Austria to share its destiny with the house of Habsburg who managed to
elevate it to an archduchy 1453 and then to an empire 1804. Under Habsburg
rule became Austria a great power who played a prominent role in European
history between 1519 and 1919. The emergence of nationalism and the First World
War was however the events that brought the end of this multiethnic empire and
created the considerably smaller modern Austrian republic.
