Brandenburg-Prussia
Brandenburg was one
of the most important principalities in the Holy Roman Empire and its margraves held
the dignity of elector from 1356, which meant that they had the right to participate
in the elections of the German kings. The Hohenzollern dynasty who ruled Brandenburg
after 1415 inherited the duchy of Prussia 1618. That land was elevated to the rank of
kingdom and Prussia replaced Brandenburg as the name of the Hohenzollern Dynasty’s
domains. Maps and texts over Prussia's history are available on this page.
